Untitled Goose Game Review and Why Mischief Feels So Good

Most games ask you to save a village. Untitled Goose Game asks you to ruin one, a little at a time, with a beak, a pair of wings and a honk button.

Most games ask you to save a village. Untitled Goose Game asks you to ruin one, a little at a time, with a beak, a pair of wings and a honk button. If you have wondered whether this tiny comedy from Melbourne studio House House is worth your evening years after its 2019 launch, this Untitled Goose Game review is for you.

The short answer: yes, with a clear idea of what you are buying. It is a two to three hour stealth puzzle game with real comic timing, a smart soundtrack and one of the best couch co-op modes added to any small game. It is also short, and the goose's charm can wear thin on a second lap.

What you actually do in Untitled Goose Game

You are a goose in an English village. Each area hands you a to do list scribbled like a shopping note: steal the gardener's keys, get the groundskeeper wet, make the boy wear the wrong glasses, trap someone in a phone box. There is no score and no timer. You solve each item by watching how the villagers behave and finding the gap.

The village is split into four main areas, then a finale:

  • The garden, where a patient gardener tends vegetables and keeps losing his tools.
  • The high street, with a shopkeeper, a boy and a market stall full of things to carry off.
  • The back gardens, two neighbours on either side of a fence, which holds the funniest chain reactions.
  • The pub, busy with staff and customers, where tasks need the most careful timing.
  • The model village, where everything you did comes back in miniature for the ending.

Controls are minimal. You can walk, run, crouch, flap your wings, grab with your beak and honk. That small set is enough because the villagers react to everything. Honk behind someone and they jump. Steal a radio and the owner chases you. Drop it in a pond and they have to fish it out.

Why the stealth works better than it should

Under the slapstick, this is a classic stealth game. Each villager has a routine, a sight line and a reaction. They will chase you off and take back what you stole, then return to what they were doing. Learning those routines and building a sequence of moves is the real puzzle.

Consider one example from the back gardens. To make one neighbour break his own vase, you need to distract him, move a specific item, and wait for him to step back at the exact moment. When it works, you feel clever and mischievous at once. It is the same satisfaction as finding the right order in Into the Breach, where every turn feels like a puzzle, just with more honking.

The game is also generous with failure. Getting caught costs you nothing except the item you were holding. You simply try again from a few steps away. That keeps the mood light, which matters for a comedy.

The music is part of the joke

The soundtrack is built from Debussy's piano Preludes, reworked so that it reacts to what you do. While you sneak, the piano plays softly in short phrases. When you are spotted or start running, it speeds up and grows louder. The result feels like a silent film pianist accompanying your crimes, and it gives every chase a sense of timing that a fixed track never could.

Untitled Goose Game co-op is the best way to play

A free update in September 2020 added a two player mode with a second goose. It is not a separate campaign; you play the same village with the same lists. Yet it changes the game more than you would expect.

Many tasks become teamwork. One goose distracts the shopkeeper while the other steals from the stall. One honks at the gardener at the front gate while the other drags the rake away at the back. The lists are still solvable alone, but with two players the planning becomes a conversation, and the misfires are funnier. A run with two geese often takes about the same time as a solo run, but generates far more laughs per minute.

Co-op is local only, on one screen, which suits it. This is a game to play side by side on a sofa with someone who laughs at the same things you do. If you enjoy that style of shared play, our It Takes Two review explains why couch co-op works so well when both players need each other.

Where the honking runs out

Plenty of reviews praise this game as endlessly replayable. I disagree. The first run is a joy because every villager reaction is a surprise. On a second run, you know the solutions, and the comedy depends on surprise.

The post game adds a second list for each area, with harder tasks and some timed challenges, like finishing an area before a certain point. Completionists will enjoy squeezing another two or three hours out of them. For everyone else, the joke has landed by the end of the first run, and that is fine. A short game that knows its length is better than a padded one.

There are a few small frustrations. The camera occasionally hides the goose behind a hedge or wall, and a couple of tasks in the pub rely on precise villager positioning that can take several attempts. Neither spoils the experience, but they stand out in a game this polished.

Is it worth buying today

Untitled Goose Game launched at 20 US dollars and is often discounted to around 8 to 10 in seasonal sales. It runs on almost anything, including modest laptops, and plays well on handheld devices.

Who it suitsWhy
Couples and friends who want a short co-op nightTwo to three hours, local co-op, no skill barrier
Players who like stealth or puzzle gamesRoutines to learn and sequences to plan
Families with older childrenNo violence, simple controls, lots of laughter
Players who want a long gameNot a fit, even with the post game list

Pay full price if you have a co-op partner ready for this weekend. Wait for a sale if you will play alone. Either way, it is one of the purest comedies in games, and few titles get this much character out of a single button.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to beat Untitled Goose Game?

Most players finish the main to do lists and the ending in two to three hours. Completing the extra post game lists and timed challenges adds roughly another two to three hours, depending on how quickly you learn the villagers' routines.

Is Untitled Goose Game good for kids?

Yes, for most ages from around seven upward. There is no violence or bad language, the controls are simple, and mischief rather than harm drives the humour. Younger children may need help with tasks that require careful timing.

Does Untitled Goose Game have online co-op?

No, co-op is local only, with both players on the same screen. On PC, some players use remote play features to share a local session online, but the game itself has no online mode.
