Helldivers 2 Review for Players Who Fear Friendly Fire

The most common thing I hear from people who bounced off Helldivers 2 is not about the difficulty or the grind.

Four armoured soldiers calling down an orbital strike on an alien planet at dusk

The most common thing I hear from people who bounced off Helldivers 2 is not about the difficulty or the grind. It is this: "I kept killing my friends and they kept killing me, and after an hour it stopped being funny." If you came from shooters where teammates are made of rubber, the first evening can feel like the game is broken.

It is not broken. Friendly fire is the design, and once you understand what the game wants from a squad, it turns into the reason the good evenings feel so good. This review is for the player who is curious but nervous, or who tried it once with randoms and gave up. I spent years in ranked queues where a teammate's mistake cost me points, so I came in with the same dread you might have.

What you are actually buying

Helldivers 2 is a four player co-op shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, published by Sony. It launched in February 2024 on PlayStation 5 and PC, and reached Xbox in 2025. You play a soldier of Super Earth, a cheerfully fascist government that sends you to spread "managed democracy" across the galaxy. The satire is broad and it works because nobody in the game ever winks at you.

Each mission drops your squad onto a planet with objectives: launch a missile, destroy nests of bugs, escort civilians, pull data from a terminal. You fight one of three enemy factions. The Terminids are swarming insects, the Automatons are relentless robots with rockets and artillery, and the Illuminate arrived later with shields and floating overseers. Each faction asks for a different loadout and a different kind of discipline.

The hook is stratagems. Instead of picking power ups off the ground, you punch a short directional code into a menu, throw a glowing beacon, and something falls from orbit. An airstrike. A machine gun turret. A resupply pod. A backpack that shields you. Typing a code while a charger is bearing down on you is part of the tension, and it never gets old.

Why friendly fire is the point, not the problem

Every weapon in the game can hurt your squad. Every airstrike can land on your own head. That sounds punishing until you notice what it does to how people play.

In most co-op shooters, four players can spray in four directions and the worst outcome is a lower score. Here, careless shooting kills people, so teams start talking. You call out where you are throwing an orbital strike. You stop firing a flamethrower down a corridor where a friend is retreating. You learn to stand behind the person with the heavy weapon, not in front of them. Those are habits of good squads in any game, and Helldivers 2 forces them in about three missions.

The game also softens the blow in ways newcomers miss. Dying is cheap. A teammate can call you back down from orbit within seconds, and each mission has a shared pool of reinforcements. Losing someone to a stray grenade costs a little time, not the run. The mission only fails if the whole squad burns through that pool or runs out the clock.

The friendly fire stops feeling like a punishment the moment your squad starts announcing where the airstrike is going.

What I would tell a nervous player is simple. Do not play your first few hours with strangers on high difficulty. Pick a lower level, bring one friend, and agree on one rule: say it out loud before you throw anything from orbit.

The parts that hold up after the honeymoon

Lots of co-op shooters are a blast for two weekends. What surprised me about this one is how well the core holds up past that point.

The Galactic War

Every mission you finish contributes to a shared campaign across the whole player base. Planets get liberated or lost, the developers push story events, and sometimes the community genuinely fails an objective. It sounds like a gimmick, and on a quiet week it can feel like one. When a big push is on, though, it gives ordinary missions a reason to exist beyond loot.

Difficulty that scales with your squad

There are ten difficulty levels. The low ones are relaxed enough for a casual evening. The high ones are some of the hardest co-op content I have played, where an unlucky patrol can snowball into chaos in under a minute. You pick, every mission, and nothing stops you dropping back down on a tired night.

Warbonds that do not expire

The premium currency buys Warbonds, which are reward tracks full of weapons, armour and cosmetics. Unlike most live service passes, they never expire, and you can earn the premium currency slowly by playing. I have not felt pushed to spend, though the store is there and some players clearly do.

Where it still frustrates

I would not call this a clean recommendation. A few things deserve a fair warning.

Balance changes have been a running sore. Weapons that players loved have been weakened, sometimes sharply, and the community reaction has occasionally been louder than the change deserved and occasionally fair. If you get attached to one gun, expect it to change.

The PC launch also carried a controversy over Sony requiring a PlayStation Network account, which made the game unavailable to buy in many countries where PSN is not offered. Sony walked the requirement back after heavy backlash, but it is worth checking the store page in your region before you buy.

And bugs remain part of the experience. Players still report crashes and odd physics, the kind that sends a teammate flying into the sky. Most are funny. A few cost you a mission.

Who should play it, and who should skip it

  • Play it if you have one to three friends who will talk on voice, and you enjoy the stories that come from things going wrong.
  • Play it carefully if you are mostly solo. Public matchmaking works and the community is mostly decent, but the game is noticeably less fun without communication.
  • Skip it if you want a competitive shooter with rankings, or a long single player story. There is no versus mode and the plot lives in the background.

If shared tools and squad roles sound appealing, our Deep Rock Galactic review covers a calmer game built on the same idea. If you are coming from competitive play and wondering how co-op feels by comparison, the Rocket League review lays out the opposite end. And before you jump into public lobbies, our piece on telling a healthy community from a noisy one applies here more than most.

Your first week, if you decide to try it

Play the tutorial, then do five missions on difficulty three or four with one friend. In each mission, take turns being the person who calls stratagems out loud before throwing them. By the fifth, you will know whether this game clicks for your group, and you will have learned the one habit that turns friendly fire from a joke into the best part of the game.
